At Spark Education AI, we’re passionate about making a measurable difference in students' reading abilities. Over the past 12 weeks, we’ve been hard at work conducting a trial with 104 students across grades, ranging from Grade 2 to Grade 5 (equivalent to Primary 3 to Primary 7 in Scotland and Year 3 to Year 6 in England).
How the Trial Worked
Each grade included classes using Spark Education AI alongside a control group that did not use Spark. Over the course of the trial, students participated in engaging, personalised reading activities powered by our AI technology, while their progress was monitored through the NGRT (GL Assessment) reading assessments.
The Results Are In
The results speak for themselves:
Classes using Spark Education AI showed a 7.8% improvement in their NGRT scores compared to the control groups.
This data is a testament to the impact that Spark has on reading comprehension. By tailoring reading materials to each student’s needs, we’re not only making reading more enjoyable but also significantly improving measurable outcomes.
Grade 5 Success Story
As an example, let’s look at the three Grade 5 (Primary 7 in Scotland/Year 6 in England) classes that participated in the trial:
Two classes used Spark Education AI during the trial.
One class acted as a control group, following their usual reading programme without Spark.
The Spark-supported classes demonstrated notable gains in NGRT scores, highlighting how effective AI-driven learning can be. Check out the chart below for a snapshot of their progress:

A Step Forward for Education
These results show that Spark Education AI isn’t just a tool—it’s a game-changer for reading comprehension. The data proves that when students are given personalised, engaging reading experiences, they thrive.
We’re incredibly proud of these results and what they mean for the future of education. As we continue developing Version 2, launching in March, we’re confident that Spark will drive even greater success stories in classrooms worldwide.
Thank you to the schools, teachers, and students who participated in this trial. Your enthusiasm and commitment are helping us shape the future of learning.
